Best B2B contact database for small business: pick by what you pay for
A small team rarely needs the biggest database. It needs the one whose billing unit matches the job, whose free or trial option lets you test a batch and whose refund and renewal terms are clear. Four questions sort the field: what exactly costs a credit, what happens when an email is wrong, is there a free plan and how hard is it to leave.
The six tools below are read from their own pricing pages, help articles and terms on October 29, 2026. Amounts are left to the vendors' live pages, which change and can differ by country or currency.
The shortlist: six tools as each vendor's pages describe them
- UpLead: one credit per contact or company, spent on the first unlock, export or download. Valid Only downloads charge for valid emails only. A seven-day free trial needs payment details at activation. Monthly plans have no long-term contract, and Professional is annual.
- Apollo: the pricing page lists a free Starter plan with no time limit. Credits are pooled across a team, reset each billing cycle and do not roll over, and add-on credits renew until removed. Cancellations take effect at the end of the plan term.
- Hunter: a free plan, paid plans and a custom Enterprise plan. Finding an email costs one credit and verifying one costs half a credit. Monthly credits reset and do not roll over, while yearly plans release all credits up front. Users are unlimited on every plan.
- Lusha: revealing a verified email costs one credit and a phone number costs five. There is a free plan with a monthly allowance. Monthly plans let unused credits accumulate up to twice the plan limit, and cancellations take effect at the end of the cycle.
- ZoomInfo: quote-based. Its FAQ says price follows features, licenses and credit usage, and each export costs one credit. Sales packages are named Professional, Copilot Advanced and Copilot Enterprise.
- Seamless.AI: its pages offer free sign-up and a free trial, then a paid plan called Seamless Pro. Its home page promises an automatic credit refund for an invalid email. Plan details load by script, so they are left to the vendor's live page.
Compare the unit, not the headline credit count
Credits are not the same thing across vendors. Hunter charges half a credit to verify an email it already found. Lusha charges five times as much for a phone number as for an email. UpLead charges one credit per contact and includes the email and mobile direct dial in that unlock. Apollo's credits also cover things such as email warmup and mailboxes.
So convert each offer to cost per usable contact: what you pay for the credits you used, divided by the contacts with a valid email, the right role and permission to contact. The UpLead pricing guide shows the formula with a worked ratio. If most of your list needs phone numbers, price the phone unit first.
Which fits which small team
- A founder testing outbound before committing: start with a free plan from Apollo, Hunter or Lusha, and see how far the free allowance goes.
- A buyer who wants published tiers and control over which email types get charged: UpLead, with the renewal terms read first.
- A team with several licenses, budget for an annual quote and a need for intent and workflow tools: ZoomInfo. See UpLead vs ZoomInfo.
- A team that mostly needs emails for a list of company domains: Hunter's per-email credit rules are the simplest to price.
- A team that wants a refund promise written into the pitch: compare UpLead's and Seamless.AI's wording, then ask for the claim process in writing.
Checks before you pay anyone
- Renewal: find the cancel-by date and whether the plan renews on its own. UpLead's terms ask for 60 days of notice on annual plans.
- Rollover: Apollo says credits do not roll over, UpLead's terms say the same, and Lusha lets monthly credits accumulate to a limit.
- Accuracy: every accuracy figure on these pages is the vendor's own claim, not an independent test.
- Deliverability: bad data costs more than the credit. Google's sender guidelines ask senders to keep reported spam rates under 0.3%. Address checking and domain warm-up are separate jobs with their own tools.
